A non-league football club revealed an unlikely sponsorship deal with a travel firm that organises trips to North Korea.A Visit North Korea pitch-side advertising board was unveiled at Blyth Spartans home ground.1

The announcement also appeared in the clubs matchday programme ahead of their National League North clash with Spennymoor Town on Boxing Day.It read: Visit North Korea provides expert led travel with an emphasis on engagement in the world’s most secretive country The Democratic Republic of Korea.“Having never visited the Far East before I was quickly calling club chairman Tony Platten who had just returned from Japan and Nepal to reveal the latest enquiry and he was as intrigued as me.“Having seen the recent Michael Palin documentary I was certainly interested by the country despite negative views on the countrys politics.”

Mark Scott, the clubs commercial manager, told Chronicle Live that the advertiser paid the 150 fee upfront and they had no problem with the ad.“We’ve had a few comments about possibly serving dog at the next match,” said Mark. “It was very cryptic, stating they wanted to advertise but wouldn’t say what it was.“I said as long as it wasn’t illegal or offensive, I didn’t care who we sold it to.”Most saw the funny side of the unusual advertisement that appeared at the match.
