Kevin Friend was announced as the referee for this years FA Cup Final between Manchester City and Watford on May 18.The two sides will face each other at Wembley with City still aiming for a domestic treble.Watfords only appearance in the final was a defeat to Everton in 1984.Getty2The referee will be an important factor in who lifts the trophy and will no doubt have some big decisions to make on the day.The long-standing tradition means that this will be Friends only appearance as an FA Cup final referee and he will be hoping it passes without any controversial incidents.Manchester City have a good record when he has taken charge of their games.Getty2They have lost just twice in the 24 times he has refereed them and Friend has never sent a City player off.The Hornets have less cause to be hopeful, though, as they have managed just four wins in 19 games with Friend officiating. When you start out you never dream that youre going to get the chance to take charge of a cup final, so to get the call this year is just fantastic.Every referee has goals and targets. There are certain games you want to be a part of and the FA Cup Final is definitely on that list.No matter what game it is, no referee can do it all on their own its all about the team. This is a huge honour for us all and Im really looking forward to it. Ben Purkiss has insisted his call for an independent review of the Professional Footballers Association was never about his desire to usurp Gordon Taylor as chief executive.Purkiss, the current PFA chairman, joined talkSPORT on Thursday to discuss the news that Taylor will step down after 38 years in charge when independent review of the union’s work and governance has been completed.Taylor has faced criticism in recent years over his running of the organisation and his reported 2.3million wages.2Since being appointed chairman in November 2017, Purkiss has clashed with Taylor over the PFAs direction and the 74-year-olds future in the role and, at Wednesdays annual general meeting, it was confirmed a review would take place.But it was also revealed that, along with Taylor, chairman Purkiss and the rest of the unions 13-strong management committee will also stand down when it is completed.Serious questions have since been raised about why the man behind this much-needed reform has been forced out of his job.And the right-back, who most recently played for Port Vale and Swindon Town, joined talkSPORT host Jim White on Thursday to have his say. His introduction would drastically change the match.Wolves were deserving of their lead, they had held on to it until the 79th minute, John Ruddy had been relatively untroubled, but there was little he could do about Deulofeu’s first. From just inside the box, their appeared little danger with bodies blocking most paths, until the former Everton man took aim with an audacious curled shot, nonchalantly struck, it had the perfect amount of power and precision to find the only part of the goal it could.It was the kind of effort which had seen him considered a wonderkid during his time with Barcelona and show flashes of his talent in two spells at Goodison Park.Even neutral fans couldn’t contain their love for the sensational strike.
