FA Cup final referee: These fans are unsure about seeing Kevin Friend officiate Manchester City vs Watford clash – ‘Cup final will be a bloodbath’
Kevin Friend was announced as the referee for this years FA Cup Final between Manchester City and Watford on May 18.The two sides will face each other at Wembley with City still aiming for a domestic treble.Watfords only appearance in the final was a defeat to Everton in 1984.Kevin Friend will take charge of the FA Cup FinalGetty2

The referee will be an important factor in who lifts the trophy and will no doubt have some big decisions to make on the day.The long-standing tradition means that this will be Friends only appearance as an FA Cup final referee and he will be hoping it passes without any controversial incidents.Manchester City have a good record when he has taken charge of their games.Referees can only officiate the FA Cup Final onceGetty2
Referees can only officiate the FA Cup Final once
They have lost just twice in the 24 times he has refereed them and Friend has never sent a City player off.The Hornets have less cause to be hopeful, though, as they have managed just four wins in 19 games with Friend officiating. He has also shown two red cards.

Departing PFA chairman Ben Purkiss tells talkSPORT: I NEVER had my eyes on Gordon Taylors job
Ben Purkiss has insisted his call for an independent review of the Professional Footballers Association was never about his desire to usurp Gordon Taylor as chief executive.Purkiss, the current PFA chairman, joined talkSPORT on Thursday to discuss the news that Taylor will step down after 38 years in charge when independent review of the union’s work and governance has been completed.Taylor has faced criticism in recent years over his running of the organisation and his reported 2.3million wages.Gordon Taylor pictured outside the PFA’s Manchester offices in 19912
Gordon Taylor pictured outside the PFA’s Manchester offices in 1991
Since being appointed chairman in November 2017, Purkiss has clashed with Taylor over the PFAs direction and the 74-year-olds future in the role and, at Wednesdays annual general meeting, it was confirmed a review would take place. But it was also revealed that, along with Taylor, chairman Purkiss and the rest of the unions 13-strong management committee will also stand down when it is completed.Serious questions have since been raised about why the man behind this much-needed reform has been forced out of his job.And the right-back, who most recently played for Port Vale and Swindon Town, joined talkSPORT host Jim White on Thursday to have his say. People questioned my motivation for taking the stance that I did, said the 34-year-old.I was asked the question whether I had my eye on 2.3million, and I certainly did not.Im more than happy to agree to that [stepping down as well as Taylor] if it allays those fears and makes everyone have more confidence in me, in what Im doing and how the review is going to progress.I want to see the review through and make sure there is someone there who can lead the evolution at the PFA.I dont want to be seen to be trying to implement things for my own gain. Its never been about me looking at how I can cement my role and position within the organisation, its been about trying to represent the members and do my best for players throughout the leagues. If it is a price to pay, then thats fine, but I genuinely believe Im trying to do my best in the role.Ben Purkiss, pictured playing for Port Vale in 20162
Ben Purkiss, pictured playing for Port Vale in 2016
It has been confirmed that none of the members on the outgoing committee will be able to apply for senior roles at the PFA for five years. However, Purkiss refused to rule out running for chief executive one day and even offered his support to whoever is selected to succeed Taylor in the role.Obviously I would love to stay within the game in some capacity and Id like to think I can influence and help players in particular, he added. The chief exec job? You would never categorically rule that out, but at the moment the forefront of my mind is making sure I do this job properly and that we really get substantive change at the end of the review.I have invested a lot in the PFA. I massively believe in players and the support they need and hopefully I will leave a legacy and give the PFA a real platform to build on.If an incoming chief exec wishes to draw on my experience or wants my assistance, I would obviously more than happy to assist in any way I possibly could. But if thats not as chairman, thats absolutely fine.

Player of the weekend: ‘Up there with Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi’ – Gerard Deulofeu heroics send Watford into first FA Cup final in 35 years
When Gerard Deulofeu came on at Wembley on Sunday, Watford were already losing 2-0 to Wolves, their chances of appearing in just their second ever FA Cup final and first since 1984, seemed remote.Deulofeu’s introduction changed the match4
Deulofeu’s introduction changed the match
Left on the bench for a ineffective display against Fulham in midweek, the Spaniard set about proving a point to Javi Gracia and he could not have chosen a more important moment to do so. His introduction would drastically change the match.Wolves were deserving of their lead, they had held on to it until the 79th minute, John Ruddy had been relatively untroubled, but there was little he could do about Deulofeu’s first. From just inside the box, their appeared little danger with bodies blocking most paths, until the former Everton man took aim with an audacious curled shot, nonchalantly struck, it had the perfect amount of power and precision to find the only part of the goal it could. It was the kind of effort which had seen him considered a wonderkid during his time with Barcelona and show flashes of his talent in two spells at Goodison Park.Even neutral fans couldn’t contain their love for the sensational strike.Deulofeu scores his first of the match4
Deulofeu scores his first of the match
Watford drew level in stoppage time, there was nothing delicate about captain Troy Deeney’s penalty, emphatically drilled in, high to Ruddy’s right. The intensity of extra-time had understandably slowed, but it was Watford who were able to muster one final push, Deulofeu again the catalyst. The Spaniard fired in the winner4
The Spaniard fired in the winner
Exchanging passes with Andre Gray, he raced away from Conor Coady and showing great strength to hold him off, impressive in itself considering his slight frame, and finished low into the far corner. It ended 3-2.There was elation, shock, even tears, Watford’s supporters went through the full range of emotions and had one man to thank for that.Deulofeu milks the applause from the Watford fans4

As the rain fell, the 25-year-old slicked back his hair and soaked up the adulation, he was in no great rush to leave the pitch as quickly as had entered it, still furious at being snubbed to start with. Jamie Carragher has told talkSPORT the Premier League title race will NOT be over if Liverpool beat Manchester City in their Etihad Stadium showdown.Liverpool face the defending champions on Thursday night in a game many are tipping to be a potential title decider.Victory for the unbeaten Reds would take them nine points clear at the league summit and ten points above City, who currently sit third below Tottenham. Its a crucial clash for Jurgen Klopp’s men, which will put their credentialsto the test as they look to finally end the club’s 29-year wait for a league crown.Liverpool are desperate to dethrone Manchester City as Premier League champions2

But while some fans may already be dreaming, Anfield legend Carragher has warned them not to get too carried away, insisting there is still plenty of time for City to catch up.Speaking on Thursdays Sports Breakfast, the former Reds defender said: If Liverpool were to win it would open up a huge lead. But it wouldnt be over, theres still a long way to go.

LISTEN: These Man United fans REALLY don’t want Liverpool winning the Premier League title!

If team with the quality of Man City can lose that ground in a month to six weeks, theres no doubt it could happen to Liverpool as well.[If it ends in a draw] I think seven points would be a very good lead for Liverpool, but it can quickly be turned around in two or three games. Can Pep Guardiola mastermind a victory over unbeaten Liverpool?
However, the confidence Liverpool would gain from winning and with the team in that position, what an opportunity that would be to win their first Premier League title.Liverpool beat Manchester City three times in 2018, so we should have great belief to go there an actually win the game.It will be difficult, of course it will, because City are a top side but they have been there and done it before.
