Tottenham Hotspur: Four things Spurs need to do to reach the next level

Tottenham Hotspur manager watches his side lose 2-1 to Southampton.
And a frustrated Mauricio Pochettino has admitted the team may now be at their maximum capacity and need to reach another level next season.Reacting to the defeat, Pochettino told talkSPORTs Alex Crook: Its a difficult thing, we are talking about the last nearly five years to change a mentality. That is a clear example that we are still not mature enough. When you talk a lot and when you find a lot of solution, its only one way, its to try to change, making different decisions thats from the past. Of course, maybe that is our limit. Its a little bit sad, but maybe we need to start to think that we need to operate in a different way from the start of next season.I think we need to find the way to operate that we can provide the club to try to achieve the last step.I think we are doing a fantastic job in the last four/five years, but I think we need more and still we are not there.Tottenham players looked dejected after their late defeat to Southampton on Saturday7

If we want to put the club in the last step like the people is talking, its of course that we need to find a way to try to provide the club the style that is going to make us to be better. But if Tottenham are to reach another level, what needs to happen at the club? talkSPORT.com takes a look.

1. Get settled in the new stadium

After more than a year-and-a-half away from White Hart Lane, the fans and players became far too fatigued.Even season ticket holders stopped going to Wembley with the extra travel and the lack of atmosphere taking the fun out of seeing Spurs play.If their new arena gets through the two planned test events they will play their last five home matches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – or whatever the new name will be.The new stadium could well be opened soon@Lilywhite_Rose7
The new stadium could well be opened soon
This should be a huge boost with fans flooding back to watch their heroes and fully get behind the team, something which has been lacking this season. If the team and supporters settle quickly then the club could get a huge boost next season. In their final season at White Hart Lane where Spurs went unbeaten on home soil in the league it felt like the crowd were sucking the ball into the back of the net and this is needed once more.

2. Improve the midfield

The loss of Mousa Dembele has been huge this season, while injuries have seen Mauricio Pochettino forced, more often than not, to field Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko as a midfield two, with either Christian Eriksen or Dele Alli occasionally dropping deeper to make it a three. If Spurs are to reach another level they need to sign at least one world-class ball progressing midfielder, like Tanguy Ndombele, while if Eriksen is to leave in the summer a creative force is also a must.On top of this, another playmaker would be a wise addition given the lack of competition for Eriksen in recent years.Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen could be on the move.7
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen could be on the move.

3. Upgrade the full-backs

Against Arsenal, Kieran Trippier was bullied relentlessly by Alex Iwobi and has struggled to find the form which saw him thrill at the World Cup last summer.Team-mate Sissoko has often been tasked with covering the England international so he isn’t so tortured by his opponents, which can leave Spurs light in the middle, which isn’t ideal.Meanwhile, Serge Aurier, Borussia Dortmund performance aside, looks far from the marauding full-back seen at Paris Saint-Germain. Often the Ivorian looks timid going forward and rarely looks to beat a man, which lets Tottenham down in games where they have the majority of possession.Kieran Trippier scored an embarrassing own goal against Chelsea and his been poor for most of the season7
Kieran Trippier scored an embarrassing own goal against Chelsea and his been poor for most of the season
The duos’ performances in contrast with how Ricardo Pereira has got on at Leicester City has many supporters raging as they clearly missed out on the better player when they eventually signed Aurier.A replacement at right-back is essential, while the promotion of Kyle Walker-Peters should be considered if both are turfed out by Pochettino. On the opposite flank, Danny Rose is finally getting back to his former self but Ben Davies, at the highest level isn’t good enough as a wing-back. His versatility makes him a great option but the fact he is ineligible for homegrown status in the Champions League means he could be a shock name on the chopping block.Ben Davies could be a casualty in any Pochettino overhaul7
Ben Davies could be a casualty in any Pochettino overhaul

4. Appoint a sporting director

Across the years, Tottenham have had numerous sporting directors, technical directors, chief scouts and head of football operations with Frank Arnesen, Damien Comolli, Franco Baldini, and Paul Mitchell being the most remembered.Without one currently, Spurs appear to be struggling to identify key signings and if they are to be more focused this summer and in the future employing a new one should be considered.Damien Comolli believes Premier League clubs must take responsibility for the England team's failings and insists nothing will change until clubs have continuity in their coaching structures beneath the first-team7
Former Tottenham director of football Damien Comolli
Upon having his title upgraded from head coach to manager, Pochettino was handed more control over transfers but right now he seems unable to strike the right balance and a helping hand is needed.Had the club been wiser last summer they would have at least had Jack Grealish on the books and right now it’s hard to argue he wouldn’t have played at least 30 times for the club and allowed players like Harry Winks some vital rest without stretching the squad.

Willian suffered the embarrassment of being shown up by Chelsea’s youth players
The Times claim the match took place after a meeting between the players and Maurizio Sarri, the Chelsea manager, to discuss Sunday’s 6-0 defeat by Manchester City. The thrashing at the Etihad was Chelsea’s biggest loss in 28 years, and made it four successive away defeats – including the shock 4-0 reverse at Bournemouth.Senior stars who took part in the warm-down game against the academy team were the substitutes and unused squad players from the Manchester City defeat, and Sarri is said to have watched the majority of the 3-3 draw. Chelsea have today been linked with hiring Zinedine Zidane as their next manager should Sarri lose his job.The Sun report Chelsea’s hierarchy are starting to support the idea of bringing Zidane, the former Real Madrid boss, to Stamford Bridge, and they are discussing when to move for the France legend.Zidane has emerged as a managerial target for Chelsea2

Chelsea have emerged as the new favourites to sign United States wonderkid Christian Pulisic, with a transfer to Stamford Bridge ‘confirmed’ by a former US international on social media. The Sun claim a 45million fee has been agreed between Chelsea and Pulisic’s current club Borussia Dortmund for the 20-year-old, who will move to London in the summer. The Blues have reportedly beaten off rival interest to agree a deal for Pulisic, with Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United all known to have been tracking him for a long time.Pulisic is widely regarded as one of the brightest young talents in world football2

While there has been no word from either club over Pulisic’s deal, the youngster’s transfer has been allegedly confirmed on Instagram.Former United States international Eddie Johnson – who played in England for Fulham, Cardiff and Preston – congratulated his compatriot on joining Chelsea, despite the lack of official statement concerning his future.Johnson appeared to confirm Pulisic’s move on Instagram2

Johnson’s message read: “So stoked for you lil’ bro, great move.Cant wait to watch you alongside Eden Hazard.”Chelsea are the only club to have made a formal offer for Pulisic, and they WILL sign him should no other team come in for the 20-year-old, according to German football expert Raphael Honigstein. My understanding is that Chelsea are the only team that have made a firm offer at the moment,” Honigstein said.

Christian Pulisic scout report: Profile on the Borussia Dortmund and United States star wanted by Europe’s biggest clubs

Dortmund are looking to see if there are other offers coming in as you would, but it is kind of agreed that the player will move in the summer definitely because he still has a year to run on his contract.Unless someone matches Chelseas offer or exceeds it, hell go there. There was some interest from Manchester United, I understand, but theyve gone a little bit quiet now because theyve got other stuff to deal with. They dont know if whoever the next guy is will want to pay that amount of money on Christian Pulisic.

With just nine games left of the season to go, there is still so much to play for in the Premier League this season.Liverpool’s dominant victory over Burnley on Sunday was the perfect response to Manchester City’s demolition of Watford 24 hours earlier. The season is nearing a conclusion after months of thrilling drama8
The season is nearing a conclusion after months of thrilling drama
While there may only be two sides remaining in the title race, the quest for a spot in next season’s Champions League has intensified.16 days ago, Tottenham Hotspur were 10 points clear of Arsenal and seemingly set to challenge City and Liverpool for the title. Now, after a crushing defeat at Southampton, Mauricio Pochettino’s men are wary of their north London rivals and a rejuvenated Manchester United. So just who has the easiest run in as the season draws to a close? Premier League champions City are hoping to defend their crown
Pep Guardiola will surely be delighted with his side’s final run of fixtures. City face Fulham away and then Cardiff City at home – two games you would fully expect them to win. They then travel to Crystal Palace before welcoming Tottenham Hotspur to the Etihad and then making a short trip to Old Trafford for a potentially decisive Manchester derby.City’s final three games are against sides who should all have secured their Premier League status and will have little to play for as they travel to Burnley, play Leicester City at home and then go to Brighton.Of all the sides in the top six, City have the easiest run in and would be quietly confident of potentially even securing maximum points. Since the start of 2019, the Citizens have lost just one game and are the form side heading into the final straight.Difficulty rating – 7.5/10

Liverpool have never won the Premier League title
The chance to lift the FA Cup has been and gone for the Reds after defeat at Wolves so they will travel to Fulham next Sunday before a home game against Tottenham.A trip to the coast to face Southampton precedes a home game against Chelsea before another trip south to face relegation candidates Cardiff City.Huddersfield then go to Anfield before fixtures at Newcastle United and then at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers. If Jurgen Klopp is to finally becomes the first Liverpool manager to lift the Premier League then he has to fix their away form against lesser teams. Dropping points at West Ham United and then Everton could prove costly by the time May comes around.Difficulty rating -7/10

Spurs are surely out of the title run after their poor form
After a good start to 2019, Tottenham Hotspur appear to be drifting away once again. Their run is dependent on FA Cup results, but could well welcome Crystal Palace to their new stadium after their trip to Anfield.Brighton and Huddersfield then travel to north London before another tough test on the road at Manchester City and then a home game against rivals West Ham.A trip to Bournemouth is their penultimate fixture before they round the season off against Everton at home. With the Champions League quarter-final still to be played and with Dele Alli and Harry Kane slowly but surely returning to form, Mauricio Pochettino MUST address the recent dip in form to ensure another promising season does not go to waste.Difficulty rating – 8/10

Unai Emery’s men secured a much-needed win over Manchester United
Arsenal’s inconsistency continues to leave fans firmly on the edge of their seats for the full 90 minutes, they face a difficult trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers before a home game against Newcastle.Their remaining fixtures are rather kind as they travel to struggling Everton and then to Watford before a home tie against Crystal Palace. It is then on to Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City before welcoming Brighton in their last home game of the season before a tricky trip to Burnley.Although they do not face any of their top six rivals, it is the tricky away games against the likes of Wolves and Burnley which have caused Arsenal to slip up in the past.Difficulty rating – 6/10

Manchester United (Current position – 5th)

Ole’s at the wheel and United are hoping to finish the season strongly8
Ole’s at the wheel and United are hoping to finish the season strongly
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can do little wrong at the moment, although he will be demanding a reaction from his players after tasting his first defeat in the Premier League. The visit of Watford next up gives United the chance to put things right.United then go away to Wolves, face West Ham home and then make a short trip to Everton – three games you would imagine they would get maximum points from.In what is potentially a season-defining game, there is the small matter of the Manchester derby and then the visit of Chelsea to Old Trafford for Solskajaer to contend with. The final two games are much kinder as they travel to Huddersfield and then welcome Cardiff City – two sides who could well be relegated by then.If United are to qualify for the Champions League, they surely cannot afford to slip up again. With Arsenal now two points ahead of them and with an easier run-in, the ‘Baby-Faced Assassin’ will be well aware of the challenge his Red Devils’ face.Difficulty rating – 8.5/10

Chelsea (Current position – 6th)

Chelsea want to make a return to the Champions League8
Chelsea want to make a return to the Champions League
After a bright start, Chelsea’s season is in huge danger of ending in disappointment. They now must prepare for back-to-back away games against Everton and Cardiff City before welcoming West Ham United to Stamford Bridge. After that, a daunting trip to Liverpool awaits with a home game against Burnley followed shortly afterwards with another trip to the north-west to face Manchester United. The final two fixtures are relatively simple on paper, as Watford travel to west London before an away day at Leicester City.If Maurizio Sarri wants to keep his job, he surely has to finish in the top four. But difficult trips to Anfield and Old Trafford and the home visit of West Ham (notorious at raising their game against the big sides) will ask serious questions of his side.Difficulty rating – 9/10
